Note: Mozambique redenominated the metical at a rate
of 1000:1 (i.e., taking three zeros off), on 1 July 2006. The new currency is
abbreviated with MTN. The new coins and banknotes were introduced on 1 July
2006. A transitional period during which both old and new meticais could be
used lasted until 31 December 2006. Old meticais can be redeemed by the Bank
of Mozambique for a period of six years, until 31 December 2012.
